John C. Walker Retires
Served Thirteen Years as Executive Director
June 30, 2005
John C. Walker has retired as
executive director of the Tipton County Foundation, after thirteen years of
leadership. During his tenure, the local public charity grew from $500,000 in
assets to nearly $18 million in various funds established by numerous donors to
serve the causes they care about.
Walker is a native
of Tipton and graduate of Tipton High School. He attended Hanover College and
served in the Korean War as an infantry officer. Upon his return home, Walker
owned and managed the Tipton Produce Co., Tipton Meat Market, Tipton Locker
Plant and Walker Poultry Farm. In 1966, he joined Pioneer Hi-Bred in the Hy-Line
Chick Division. He transferred to the Corn Division in 1972 and retired in 1992.
Walker’s
achievements were recognized by Foundation President Ben Hobbs and other board
members at
the
Foundation’s annual meeting June 24, and he received a gift of appreciation at
the conclusion of the Golf Classic the next day. “John’s experience in business
and knowledge of Tipton County have served the community and its Foundation very
well,” Hobbs said. “We are grateful for the key role he has played in helping
this to become the largest per capita community foundation in Indiana.”
The Tipton County Foundation was
formed in 1986 as a not-for-profit organization to assist in identifying and
addressing the quality of life issues of Tipton County citizens. Since the year
2000 alone, over $3 million have been distributed through the Foundation
according to donor wishes to local charities, for scholarships to high school
graduates from the county, and for special projects and causes. Contributions
may be made to any fund, or a new fund established, at the Foundation office,
1020 West Jefferson St., Tipton. Applications for grants are also available
there.
The Foundation’s
next activity for all families in the county is Ducky Day in the Tipton Park,
Sunday, August 28, 2005. Children’s games, food, a talent show, and fun for all
will precede the exciting duck race. To enter a duck for $5, and potentially win
valuable prizes, visit the Foundation office or call 675-8480.
