October 5, 2005 The Tipton County Foundation has announced the distribution of its special “Katrina Recovery” fund that was established in the wake of the hurricane last month. Over $4,500 was contributed to this fund, by individuals, businesses, organizations, and mass collections from many anonymous donors. As promised when the fund was announced, the proceeds are being distributed to knowledgeable local people in the affected area, where volunteer boards can apply them to unmet needs. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation is a public charity based in Biloxi, Miss., but temporarily evacuated to Fairview, Ala. This foundation has two specialized funds to which the Tipton County Foundation has sent $1,750 to be allocated where they feel the need is greatest. The “Build Back the Coast Fund” was established to focus energy and resources on regenerating jobs and business on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Grants will be given to local organizations. The “Goodworks Fund” is a long-standing fund of the GCCF used in times of crisis. This fund is designed to help individuals as well as organizations. In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Greater New Orleans Foundation has established the “Rebuild New Orleans Fund” designated for the relief, recovery, and betterment of the community. This fund will focus on rebuilding a better New Orleans than the one we knew. These philanthropic dollars will enable a broader voice to be heard during the restructuring process and will provide best practices during the researching, planning, and rebuilding progression. TCF is sending $1,750 to this fund, as well. The remaining $1,000 has been sent to Ocean Springs Middle School in Mississippi, in honor of the outstanding youth philanthropy shown by the students of Tri-Central Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The Northern Community schools raised over $4,500 in various ways. They cheerfully sent it to unknown schoolmates for supplies and materials they need as they resume schoolwork in extremely difficult circumstances. TCF was so impressed by this gesture that they recognized the student leaders and faculty advisors with this complementary allocation from the Katrina Recovery fund.
TCF will still accept and pass along further donations to
the Katrina Recovery fund, and always works to help donors achieve their
charitable goals. Information about these activities and all of the work of the
