Foundation
will transmit funds to Gulf Coast
The Tipton County
Foundation will receive tax-deductible contributions from local residents to
benefit recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina. Foundation president Tom
McKinney, Kempton, announced plans for a fund that will pass through the
county’s public charity and be made available to similar community foundations
in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

"There are already
organizations on the front lines, such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army,
providing lifesaving disaster relief," McKinney said. "FEMA will use tax dollars
to help families and businesses pull through. Some church denominations may help
their flooded congregations rebuild. Insurance companies will have to pay
billions in claims. But weeks from now, when the water has receded and most of
the power is restored, there will be nonprofit organizations, providers of
worthy and essential charitable programs in the hurricane zone just as they are
here, who absolutely won’t have the resources they need to get back to work,"
according to the Foundation announcement.
"Our idea is that, just as
we hope the Tipton County Foundation Board has the contacts and knowledge to
provide grants to meet local needs here, there are community foundations on the
Gulf Coast who will know of staggering needs there, but will not have the
resources to address them," McKinney explained. "With special contributions from
caring Hoosiers, we can help them jump start their grant making in this crisis."
The Tipton County Foundation
(TCF) is a nonprofit public charity established in 1986 to serve donors, award
grants, and provide leadership to improve the quality of life in Tipton County,
forever. Contributions to the Foundation are tax-deductible under section
501(c)(3) and other provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. According to TCF
executive director Frank Giammarino, other foundations are likely to take
similar steps in the next few weeks to help interested donors make a thoughtful
gift that can have a lasting impact in recovering from the emergency situation.
"Hoosier volunteers, power
crews, emergency workers, National Guard, and thousands of contributed dollars
are already at work in the disaster area," Giammarino said. "This new idea of
strengthening a flexible, knowledgeable charity can make sure that dollars
invested here will have a lasting impact assisting our fellow citizens in New
Orleans and surrounding areas. Surely any of us who have visited there value the
special ambience of the Big Easy and we all hope it can be restored," he
said.
Individuals, companies, and
organizations can make donations of any size to the Tipton County Foundation,
Inc., designated for "Katrina Recovery". Contributions can be mailed to TCF, PO
Box 412, Tipton, IN 46072. The Foundation’s office and conference center, at
1020 W. Jefferson St. in Tipton (adjoining the Pioneer campus), is staffed
weekday mornings from 8 am to Noon. For more
