A New Collection of Paintings by Hoosier Artists Visits Tipton County Foundation Office & Conference Center

November 16 - December 14, 2006 (Now Closed)

Painting Indiana: The Changing Face of Agriculture is a collaborative project that documents Indiana life and land through a painting technique popularized by the French Impressionists known as open air painting, or “plein air painting.” The Changing Face of Agriculture is a traveling exhibit accompanied by compelling programs that reveal art and agriculture through new perspectives and to interest young people and adults in both the arts and agriculture. It engages audiences through interactive elements, which encourage thought about agriculture and art.

This project follows the successful 2000 arts initiative, Painting Indiana: A Portrait of 92 Counties. The success of this venture has emboldened the partner organizations to pursue this second and more complex project to advance understanding of the many facets of agriculture and its significance to Indiana.

Contemporary Indiana agriculture—production, processing, distribution and consumption—will be interpreted through the eyes and imagination of 10 artists. These Hoosier artists, working across the spectrum of contemporary agribusiness, will unveil an often overlooked but critical foundation of life through a unique interactive traveling exhibit.

They are documenting the many diverse facets of Indiana agriculture — migrant workers in the tomato fields, mint and popcorn crops, and livestock; how food and fiber is distributed via rail, barges and across highways, and the products we consume, wear, and use in our everyday lives. Their journey and the business of agriculture are being recorded not only through the art, but also through interviews and video, which will become a living history. These works have become the foundation of a unique exhibit, making its first appearance outside Marion County at the Tipton County Foundation!
